Sometimes We Come Undone
Love, pain…both, emotions we will inevitably experience as we grow. However, the biggest lessons are not our ability to experience those emotions but our ability to cope in spite of them. Growing up, my coping mechanism was crying (as most of ours was or is). However, with each stage of maturity (and I say the word maturity lightly), I found different ways to cope. Some of these ways were healthy, such as writing, but some of these coping skills became some of my most unhealthy moments… Self-harm, binge eating.. pretty much, most of the things we are told make us less sane. Until one day I realized that people continued to mistreat me because what I would do to myself, when no one was watching, reflected to others like some refracted light. People can sense energies more than we care to realize, and I was sending them the vibes that I liked to be damaged. So they did, hurt me, and this was the cycle for many years… with lovers, with friends. It all reminds me of a book I read by Wally Lamb (one of my favorite authors, by the way).
Wally Lamb does a beautiful job of taking the reader on a journey through this coming of age story. The book explores, love, pain, what unhealthy coping looks like and the phoenix moments of a rise from the undone. “She’s Come Undone” really gave me perspective of owning my part in the chaos of my life. Accepting what I was unable to change and making changes where I could. It helped me define a level of self-respect and self-reflection (and that concept in my life is ever changing, always “leveling up”). My children’s book characters are not these perfection fictional creatures. They are based on real people, with real problems. Attempting to find themselves in a world who constantly tells them who they should be. Just like my characters and the character of this book, we are all just trying to find peace in our own reflections.
If you are feeling up to some deep diving, add it to your reading list! I know a lot of people cannot go outside right now, so do not forget that audio books are available on all smart devices. The audio book app is normally embedded for apple users. However, you may have to search in your device store for an application which allows you to download audio books. Happy reading!!
